Since 1992, Dr. Stephen Herring has worked as a plastic surgeon for Herring Plastic Surgery in Fayetteville, North Carolina. A member of several professional organizations, Dr. Herring belongs to the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS).

Established in 1943, the AAPS is a professional association representing physicians who work in various types of practices. During its tenure, the organization has held rallies for physicians, defended doctors who have been wronged by Medicare, and informed members of current issues through its monthly newsletter.

One of AAPS’s sponsored events is its annual one-day workshop: “Thrive, Not Just Survive.” On January 29, 2016, the 23rd annual workshop in Orlando, Florida, featured a program explaining how to build a healthy, independent practice. Attendees earned up to four hours of continuing medical education credit for attending the workshop. Physicians, residents, and staff who attended the class were encouraged to move away from third-party contracts and open their own practices. Upon completion of the program, attendees participated in an hour-long question-and-answer session. Afterward, guests had an option to attend a dinner, which included a discussion of politics and practices. Keynote speaker Dr. Elaina George discussed how doctors and patients can together create a better healthcare system.
